Our bedroom

The last room in the house to renovate…!

I had been wanting to rip off the dodgy wallpaper and rip up the sad, sun bleached carpet for three years, but we were doing this project slowly and on a budget, so that had to wait. Alex and I had agreed that as soon as we got back from our honeymoon, we would start work on it.

Here’s what it looked like when we viewed the house in 2016:

So we finally set about stripping it out ready for plastering. I used a wallpaper steamer and a scraper for this - it took me about a day to completely strip.

The walls were too bad to fill and sand, so we decided to get a plasterer in.

Freshly plastered, we had to wait a couple of days for it to completely dry.

When the plaster had dried, it was time to put the white base coat on! This really transformed the space, and I was able to see that my plan was hopefully going to work.

Colour wise, I choose to use Farrow and Ball’s ‘Setting Plaster’. I’d seen some amazing projects of Rebecca Wakefield’s, and was super keen to use this in our bedroom. I opted to colour match it with Dulux Trade as I had done this with our other bedroom and was really impressed with the colour match and texture (Dulux Trade is much thicker than standard Dulux and one 2L tin goes SO far).

Doors & Woodwork

The woodwork is painted in a standard white Satinwood finish which contrasts really beautifully with the Setting Plaster colour on the walls. When we bought the house, the old owner had removed the cupboard door so that she could use the area as a sort of dressing table area. We needed the wardrobe space though, so wanted to rehang the old door. Luckily it had only been moved into the loft, so we unearthed it and brought it back to life. It makes such a difference being able to shut the door on all our crap!

All the doors had original handles and coat hooks, so I sprayed them black to match the rest of our doors. This saved loads of money, and keeps some of the house’s character intact :)

Carpet

I used Kersaint Cobb Tiger’s Eye Sisal in Flint to match the rest of the upstairs carpet. I sourced it from Designer Carpet who had an off cut in the right size. Once again, it was tricky and quite costly to fit, but it does look great, and is super hard wearing.
